Outline

Outline.

Sometimes I feel like an outline

people see me but they don’t see me

really see me

the me that lies between and within the lines

they see who they want to see

they see what they want me to be

they see who they think is me

but they don’t see me

they don’t see the me that I am

the me who is more than an outline

they don’t see me at all

can they see me?

can they see I am more

than a figure

a shape

a body?

i am flesh and blood

i bleed as do they.

i bleed just like you.

man

woman

young

old

skinny

fat

hairy

bald

gay

straight

single

attached

rich

poor

happy

sad

saved

not saved

what does it matter?

if all you see

if all you bother to see

is an outline

you see that which you want to see

what you are conditioned to see

but there is much more to me

much more than an

outline

a title

a stereotype

a shape

a description

a body.

i am you

you are me

we are we

we are not an outline

we are much, much more.

look

see

really see

and you will find

the me i am

the me that is you

and the you that is me

within

throughout

Not an outline.

  1. I’m actually disappointed that no one “got” what I was trying to say with this poem and basically saw only an “outline” rather than the guts of it.
